Accessibility and Sustainability: Cortina Skiworld’s Vision

For Cortina Skiworld, accessibility and sustainability are not just goals, but guiding principles in the development of the mountain area. The lift companies of the Cortina d’Ampezzo, San Vito, Auronzo and Misurina consortium are committed to making the mountains accessible to everyone, all year round, while carefully protecting the Alpine environment.

In recent years, the ski area has undergone significant modernization works, including lift upgrades, enhanced slope safety, improvements in snowmaking systems and increased energy efficiency. Following the investments made for the 2021 Alpine World Ski Championships, further developments are planned to continue innovating while respecting the unique Dolomite landscape.

An increasingly inclusive mountain

Special attention is given to removing architectural barriers and improving lift accessibility.

The Lagazuoi cable car allows visitors to reach high altitude within minutes and is equipped to accommodate guests with reduced mobility. A dedicated path also enables wheelchair users to reach the summit cross.

The Freccia nel Cielo lift system provides access to Cima Tofana, offering breathtaking views in a fully accessible setting. The Faloria and Cristallo lift systems, as well as the Rio Gere area, also offer dedicated accessibility solutions.

In San Vito, a long-standing commitment to adaptive skiing has made accessibility a tradition, while Auronzo has joined the “Dolomiti senza barriere” (Dolomites Without Barriers) project, removing architectural barriers in nearly all of its facilities.

Cortina’s commitment to inclusive sport is further confirmed by hosting international Para Alpine Ski World Cup events on the iconic Olympia delle Tofane slope.

Efficient and responsible mobility

Lift systems play a key role in promoting sustainable mobility in the mountains. The Cortina Skyline gondola, connecting the Tofane area with 5 Torri, allows skiers to move between different sectors without using a car, significantly reducing road traffic.

In summer as well, lifts are increasingly used as an environmentally friendly alternative to road transport, encouraging a more integrated and sustainable mobility system.

Innovation in support of the environment

Environmental protection also involves technological research. The Rescue Permafrost Project, launched in the Ra Valles area, aims to counteract the effects of permafrost thawing — a consequence of climate change that can affect ground stability and Alpine infrastructure.

The goal is to combine growth, innovation and major international events with the protection of the Dolomites’ delicate ecosystem, promoting a forward-looking and responsible model of mountain development.
